Abstract Photographic Collage
Layered Photography Reimagined as Fine Art
This collection of abstract photographic collage works by Martin Osner reflects a shift from capturing a single moment to constructing a visual experience. Through layered photographic montage, mirrored compositions, and the assembly of multiple image fragments, each artwork is carefully built rather than simply captured. These works blur the line between photography and abstraction, creating pieces that feel both structured and intuitive.
Analogous Anthology — Abstract Photographic Collage Series
The Analogous Anthology series explores abstract photographic collage as a way of reinterpreting visual fragments through layering, repetition, and subtle transformation. Each piece is constructed from photographic elements that are reorganised into a new visual language, where texture, tone, and structure take precedence over literal representation. Rather than capturing a single moment, these works bring together multiple impressions, allowing relationships to form between image, pattern, and atmosphere.
Through this process, photography becomes more than a recording tool — it becomes a medium for interpretation and expression. The series invites a slower engagement, encouraging the viewer to discover visual connections and subtle analogies within each composition. The result is a body of work that balances structure and abstraction, offering a layered, contemplative viewing experience.

Analogous Anthology #1
This photomontage was created from details on the underside of an old fishing boat. The weathered paint and worn gunwale revealed textures and tones that were photographed and assembled to create the illusion of a Dutch harbour, with inlets and distant cranes beneath a winter sky.
As the first piece in the collection, it has become one of the most popular works in the gallery, with only a few prints from the limited edition remaining.

Analogous Anthology #2
This photomontage was created from details on corrugated fishermen’s huts along the ocean. The weathered, peeling paint revealed strong textures and rhythmic patterns, photographed using side lighting to emphasise their structure. The interplay of light and shadow brings focus and balance, drawing attention to the natural repetition within the surface.
As the second piece in the collection, it continues the exploration of simplicity through photographic montage, transforming ordinary materials into abstract compositions.

Analogous Anthology #3
This photomontage was created from scratched wall surfaces discovered at a wine farm. The warm orange and grey tones, marked by spontaneous lines and textures, revealed a natural harmony that was photographed in segments. These elements were assembled to suggest the form of a dancing figure, with subtle markings shaping the impression of movement and a face within the composition.
As part of the collection, it reflects how simple, unexpected surfaces can be transformed into expressive photographic montage.

Analogous Anthology #4
This photomontage was created from stone walls and weathered signage observed at a client’s property. The layered stone blocks, shaped by time and the coastal environment, revealed strong textures and natural structure, while the rusted house number added a contrasting element. Photographed under soft, overcast light, these details were assembled to highlight depth, balance, and pattern within the composition.
As part of the collection, it reflects how everyday architectural surfaces can be transformed into structured and expressive photographic montages.

Analogous Anthology #5
This photomontage was created using painted art paper developed alongside a commissioned work. Leftover paint was applied intuitively, initially to thin out brushes, revealing layered watercolour textures and unexpected tonal variations. As the colours began to harmonise, the piece evolved into a finished work, with turquoise tones balanced by neutral beiges and subtle reddish browns.
As part of the collection, it reflects a more spontaneous approach to photographic montage, where instinct and process guide the final composition.

Analogous Anthology #6
These textures were created using a stamping technique on different substrates, each producing its own distinct surface and colour variation. Rather than trying to create continuity between them, each segment was allowed to exist independently. When brought together, these contrasting elements form a surprisingly harmonious composition, where variation becomes the unifying force.
This piece explores how separate textures and colour fields can come together to create balance, revealing a cohesive and expressive photographic montage.

Analogous Anthology #7
This piece was created from painted paper developed while working on a commissioned artwork, in which excess paint was applied with a roller onto spare sheets. The resulting abstract textures revealed bold and expressive colour fields, which were later photographed in segments to form the final composition. The strong use of colour was intentional, allowing the piece to stand apart while maintaining its own visual presence.
It reflects how the art-making process itself can become a source of inspiration, where spontaneous actions lead to striking photographic montage.

Analogous Anthology #8
This piece was created during an early morning shoot at a local fishing harbour, where overcast conditions made the intended seascape unsuccessful. On leaving the location, the painted concrete blocks underfoot revealed strong textures and intersecting lines. When assembled, these elements formed a striking X-shaped composition, with the graphic structure becoming the focal point.
The monochrome treatment enhances the contrast and simplifies the scene, allowing the form and texture to define the photographic montage.

Earth, Wind & Fire — Abstract Photographic Collage Series
The Earth, Wind & Fire series explores a more fluid and expressive approach to abstract photographic collage. Rather than presenting a single fixed perspective, each artwork is constructed through a sequence of photographic impressions that shift subtly across the composition. This creates a sense of movement and atmosphere, where the image feels less static and more alive, as if it is unfolding over time.
Through this looser visual structure, the works move beyond traditional representation and into a more interpretive space. Elements of sky, earth, and natural texture are reimagined through tone, rhythm, and layering, allowing the viewer to experience the scene as a feeling rather than a place. The result is a body of work that captures the essence of the subject, offering a balance between structure and abstraction while retaining the depth and richness of photographic collage.

Earth, Wind & Fire
This piece was created from my studio overlooking Hout Bay, capturing the mountains stretching towards Chapman’s Peak under a dramatic evening sky. The scene was photographed in segments across the horizon, allowing the shifting light and atmosphere to unfold naturally within the composition. The rich, fiery tones of the sunset bring warmth and intensity to the work.
The slight misalignment and overlap of the clouds add energy and movement, giving the piece a sense of rhythm while maintaining the depth of a photographic montage.

Earth, Wind & Fire
This piece was photographed over the Atlantic Ocean on a winter’s afternoon, with strong winds and heavy cloud formations moving across the sky. The scene was captured in segments, allowing the shifting patterns and movement of the clouds to unfold within the composition. The cooler blue tones and subtle variations in hue create a sense of depth and atmosphere.
The layered structure enhances the feeling of motion, reflecting the energy of the wind while maintaining the softness and rhythm of a photographic montage.

Earth, Wind & Fire
This piece was created from rock formations photographed beside a mountain pool near a waterfall on Table Mountain. The natural tones, from soft stone hues to deeper charcoal tones, revealed rich patterns captured in segments. As the composition came together, the structure began to suggest the silhouette of Table Mountain, with Lion’s Head on the right and Devil’s Peak on the left.
The layered textures and tonal contrasts echo the fiery sky and the last light of the day, adding intensity and atmosphere to the photographic montage.

Mirror Island — Reflections in Abstract Photographic Collage
The Mirror Island series explores a more intricate approach to abstract photographic collage, where natural landscapes are transformed through symmetry and reflection. Using tree formations and organic structures found in nature, each image is carefully composed to mirror both horizontally and vertically, creating a balanced and immersive visual experience.
This layered symmetry introduces a central horizon, forming the illusion of an island suspended within its own reflection. The stillness of the composition suggests calm water, while the mirrored elements bring a sense of depth, rhythm, and quiet complexity. Through this process, familiar natural scenes are reimagined into something more contemplative — where structure, abstraction, and storytelling come together.
These works invite the viewer to pause and explore the symmetry within nature, revealing how reflection can transform a simple landscape into a striking and expressive piece of fine art photography.

Mirror Island #1
This piece was photographed during a drought in the Western Cape, where dry conditions gave the trees a stark and fragile appearance. Set against a mountain in shadow, the cooler blue tones contrast with the natural beige of the branches. The image was then mirrored to create the illusion of an island suspended within its own reflection.
The symmetry and tonal balance enhance the stillness of the composition, giving the work a quiet and contemplative presence.

Mirror Island #2
This piece was photographed during autumn, when the leaves were shifting into warm seasonal tones. The strong orange hues contrast beautifully with the cooler blues, creating a vibrant and balanced palette. Backlighting through the trees adds depth and glow, enhancing the natural structure of the scene. The image was then mirrored to form the illusion of an island within its own reflection.
The combination of light, colour, and symmetry gives the work a striking presence, making it one of the most popular pieces in the collection.

Mirror Island #7
A subtle circular movement emerges within this composition, created by using the outer trees as dominant framing elements. Unlike the others in the series, the eye is gently drawn inward through this rotational flow. The warm ochre tones bring richness and depth, softly contrasting with the cooler hues in the background.
The mirrored structure enhances both rhythm and symmetry, giving the artwork a distinctive presence within the Mirror Island collection.

Where Photography Becomes Expression
This collection reflects a deeper exploration of abstract photographic collage, in which the camera is used not only to capture a scene but also to interpret it. As a photographic artist, Martin Osner works through the lens with the same freedom and intention as he does with brush and paint in the studio. In this series, the lens becomes the brush — shaping movement, layering visual elements, and allowing energy to emerge through the composition.
Rather than presenting a fixed moment, these works invite a more fluid way of seeing. Through photographic montage, individual fragments are brought together to form something new—a visual language that moves beyond documentation into expression. Texture, tone, and rhythm take precedence, creating artworks that feel both structured and intuitive.
This approach to abstract photographic collage opens up new possibilities for photography as fine art. It allows the artist to move beyond what is seen and into what is felt, offering viewers a more immersive and contemplative experience. In doing so, the collection stands as a reflection of how photography can evolve into a powerful medium of artistic expression.
